How it works
Develop leadership by having players lead a halftime tactical talk and adjustment for their team.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- pinnies
- whiteboard or cones for demonstration
Your focus
Tactical leadership , reading the game and communicating adjustments , is a critical advanced skill. Players who can assess and communicate at halftime develop strategic intelligence alongside interpersonal leadership. This mirrors what players will encounter as senior athletes.
Play a 10-minute scrimmage first half.
During the midpoint (3 minutes), one designated player leads the team talk without coach input.
The leader identifies two things to improve and two things to continue; communicates to teammates.
Play second half; evaluate whether the leader's adjustments were implemented.
Helpful cues
- Be specific: not 'defend better' but 'drop deeper on set pieces'
- A great halftime talk is positive AND action-oriented
- Leaders earn respect by being right, analyze carefully
