How it works

Develop defensive leadership by designating a player to organize and communicate a defensive shape during a game scenario.

What you need

  • field hockey sticks
  • field hockey ball
  • cones
  • pinnies

Your focus

Defensive leadership requires confidence, clear communication, and game reading. Players who take on defensive organizing roles develop these qualities explicitly. Teams with strong defensive leaders are more organized and harder to break down.

1

Assign a 'defensive leader' for each 4-minute game period in a small-sided activity.

2

The leader is responsible for organizing defensive shape and calling every defensive instruction.

3

No other defender may call defensive instructions, it must go through the leader.

4

Rotate the leadership role every 4 minutes; evaluate communication quality.

Helpful cues

  • A defensive leader is loud and clear, always
  • Organize before the ball comes, not after
  • Leadership means taking responsibility, not taking credit

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach provides defensive instructions; leader echoes them to teammates.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Leader must give positional feedback to each teammate between game periods.
