Your focus
Shooting mechanics learned early become lifelong habits. Players who develop the correct BEEF (Balance, Eyes, Elbow, Follow-through) mechanics from a close range build muscle memory that scales to every distance as they grow. Starting close ensures more makes, more repetition, and more confidence.
Player stands 3 feet from the basket directly in front of the rim.
One-hand shooting form: set the ball on the shooting hand, guide hand on the side, bend knees, extend up, release with wrist snap and follow-through.
Coach checks elbow alignment, guide hand behavior, and follow-through hold.
Make 20 shots from this distance before moving to 5 feet.
Goal
You've got it when the ball goes in off the backboard from close range every time, not off the side, not air ball. Form shooting is only form shooting if the form works.
Helpful cues
- Hold your follow-through until the ball hits the net
- Elbow under the ball like a shelf
- Look at the target, not the ball, as you release

Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
