How it works

Teach young players to literally 'shake off' a mistake with a physical gesture and immediately reengage.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop

Your focus

Physical gestures help young athletes process and release negative emotion quickly. Teaching a 'shake it off' ritual gives players a concrete tool to break out of mistake-induced mental spirals. This simple habit protects young players' love of the game by keeping mistakes from becoming shame-inducing events.

1

Teach players the 'Shake It Off' routine: after any mistake, shake both hands out once, take a breath, and say 'Next!'

2

During a moving with the ball or passing drill, coach intentionally creates conditions for mistakes.

3

After every mistake, the player must perform the routine before continuing. No sulking allowed.

4

Coach recognizes the quickest recoveries out loud to positively reinforce the behavior.

Helpful cues

  • Shake it off, let the mistake go with your hands
  • Next play is always more important than the last play
  • The faster you recover, the more plays you can impact
