How it works

Build resilience by sprinting back on defense immediately after a turnover or missed shot.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop
  • full court

Your focus

The moment after a turnover or missed shot is the hardest moment in basketball to sprint back on defense. Players who feel discouraged naturally slow down, creating easy transition opportunities for the opponent. Training the automatic sprint-back after a mistake builds the resilient defensive response that coaches demand.

1

Run a 3v3 half-court game. Any time a player turns the ball over or misses a shot, they must immediately sprint to the defensive key before doing anything else.

2

Coach tracks: who sprints back? Who slows down after their own mistake?

3

Award 1 resilience point per perfect sprint-back. Team with most resilience points wins.

4

Debrief: Why is it hard to sprint after your mistake? What helps you do it anyway?

Goal

You've got it when you sprint back on defense immediately every single time, no matter what just happened. Turnover, missed shot, foul, sprint back.

Helpful cues

  • Sprint back first, feel bad about it later, when you're on defense
  • Every mistake buys you a chance to make a stop, use it
  • Resilient players never give up a fast break after a turnover

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Only the player who made the mistake must sprint, not the whole team.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

If player doesn't sprint back within 2 seconds, the entire team runs a conditioning sprint.
