How it works

Develop a calm, performance-focused mindset under progressively increasing pressure scenarios.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop

Your focus

Pressure reveals mindset. Players with championship mindsets see high-pressure moments as opportunities, not threats. Training the brain to interpret pressure as positive arousal , using breathing, positive self-talk, and routine , transforms performance in close games. This is the mindset training that separates elite from average at the same skill level.

1

Player shoots 5 free throws. Coach and teammates watch in complete silence (low pressure).

2

Add moderate pressure: coach tracks and announces misses out loud.

3

Add high pressure: team must run if player misses 2 in a row.

4

Debrief: At which level did mindset change? What triggered the shift? What helped maintain composure?

Helpful cues

  • Pressure is information, your body is prepared, not panicking
  • Use positive self-talk: 'I've made 1000 of these. This is the same shot.'
  • The mindset you choose determines whether pressure helps or hurts you
