Your focus
Competitive drive is revealed when a player is losing, not when they are winning. Players who continue to compete at full intensity while trailing build the resilience and drive that define elite athletes. Every championship team has players who refuse to accept defeat even when the odds are against them.
Play 1v1 to 7 points. After one player reaches 5 points, coach announces 'No-quit rule', trailing player must verbalize 'I'm still in this' before every possession.
Coach tracks effort level: Is trailing player defending with the same intensity?
Loser does 10 push-ups but receives verbal recognition for effort from coach.
Play 3 games per pair. Track who shows the best competitive drive when trailing.
Goal
It's working when you win at least 2 possessions after falling behind by 3, you didn't check out, you competed back.
Helpful cues
- The score doesn't change your effort, your effort changes the score
- They're watching how you compete when you're down, what do they see?
- One more stop, one more score, that's all competitive drive requires
