How it works

Build competitive drive by continuing to work to get open even after being denied multiple consecutive times.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop

Your focus

Competitive drive is tested most when a player is being denied, frustrated, and unable to get the ball. Players who give up when denied cost their team easy shots. Players who keep fighting create defensive breakdowns that open up teammates. This drill builds the relentless off-ball work ethic of elite players.

1

Offensive player works to get open on the wing against a defender who is playing full denial.

2

Passer (coach) is required to skip the pass to another spot if denied. Offense must keep moving.

3

Drill runs for 2 minutes. Count how many times offense gets open vs. how many times they stop trying.

4

Debrief: How many times did you want to give up? What kept you going?

Helpful cues

  • Keep moving, a stationary player is easy to deny
  • Fight for every step of separation, don't settle for covered
  • Effort to get open is just as valuable as effort on the ball
