How it works
Teach young players when to hold and when to pass using a traffic-light decision framework.
What you need
- basketball
- colored cones
Your focus
Young players often hold the ball too long or pass too quickly. The stoplight metaphor gives them a concrete mental framework: red means stop and protect, yellow means look, green means go with a pass or dribble attack. This simple model accelerates decision making development at the youngest ages.
Coach holds up colored cards: Red (player holds ball), Yellow (player scans for open teammate), Green (player passes to the open player).
During a 2v2 drill, coach flashes cards randomly to test reactions.
Incorrect responses (passing on red, holding on green) count as turnovers.
Play 5 minutes. Team with fewest turnovers wins.
Goal
You've got it when you stop on red and go on green every time, no false moves, no hesitation when it's the right moment.
Helpful cues
- Red: hug the ball. Yellow: look. Green: go!
- Trust the light, don't second-guess it
- Your eyes need to be as fast as your hands
