How it works

Apply read-and-react offensive principles in 5v5 play where the ball handler's decision determines everyone's movement.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop
  • full court

Your focus

Read-and-react systems teach all five players to read the same cues and react with pre-trained movements, creating synchronized offense without set plays. When the ball handler makes the right decision, everyone else benefits simultaneously. This drill accelerates collective basketball IQ faster than any other format.

1

Run a read-and-react possession starting with a pass to the elbow.

2

Ball handler at the elbow reads: cut if passer basket-cuts, catch-and-shoot if defender sags, drive if overplayed.

3

All off-ball players read the ball handler's decision and fill accordingly: short corner, weak-side, etc.

4

Play 15 possessions. After each, ask all 5 players what they were reading and why.

Goal

You're there when everyone knows their move before the ball arrives, the read-and-react system is running on its own, not being directed on every possession.

Helpful cues

  • Every player is reading the same cues, you're a system, not 5 individuals
  • React to what happened, not what you hoped would happen
  • One read right = 5 players moving correctly, that's the goal

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Give each player a specific assignment based on the ball handler's action.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Defense can switch coverages mid-possession, offense must re-read.
