How it works

Make the correct decision to drive to the basket or dish to an open teammate based on defensive positioning.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop
  • defenders

Your focus

Drive-or-dish decisions happen dozens of times per game. Players who read the defense correctly before driving generate layups and wide-open catch-and-shoot opportunities. This drill builds the visual pattern recognition that makes these decisions automatic at full speed.

1

Ball handler attacks from the wing against one on-ball defender. A second defender positions at the rim.

2

If rim defender steps out to help, ball handler dishes to the corner player. If rim defender stays, ball handler finishes.

3

Every decision is evaluated after: Was the rim defender guarding you or the corner?

4

Run 10 reps from each wing. Track correct-decision percentage.

Goal

It's working when you make the correct drive-or-dish decision at least 4 out of 5 reps, defender back, drive; defender closed, dish. Read, then react.

Helpful cues

  • Eyes up as you attack, the help defender tells you everything
  • Dish before contact, don't wait until you're in trouble
  • Score or assist: both count, both are correct
