Your focus
Last possessions of close games are the highest-stakes decision-making moments in basketball. Teams that have practiced these possessions , inbound, spacing, ball-screen, counter action , make better decisions under pressure. This drill trains the calm, precise thinking that defines elite late-game execution.
Set up: 15 seconds on clock, down 1, inbounding from half-court sideline.
Coach calls a play. Offense has one inbound and one possession to get a shot off.
The primary read is the first option. If defender takes it away, player must immediately go to secondary read.
Debrief every rep: Was the primary read available? If not, how quickly did the player go to secondary?
Goal
It's clicking when the last possession produces a quality shot within the shot clock, not a forced heave, but a well-executed play that created something good.
Helpful cues
- Primary is primary unless defense takes it, then trust your second read
- 15 seconds: inbound, 1 dribble, 2 passes max, get a shot
