How it works
Develop team defensive rotations by communicating and rotating correctly as the ball moves around the perimeter.

Your focus
Defense is a team skill that requires synchronized movement and communication. The shell drill is the foundation of all team defensive systems because it trains gap principles and rotation habits. Teams that master this give up far fewer uncontested shots.
Set 4 offensive players around the three-point arc with 4 defenders in help positions.
Offense passes the ball around without dribbling. Defense must rotate, call assignments, and close out on every pass.
Every defender must touch the ball handler's assignment before the ball moves again.
After 3 minutes, let offense drive once, defense must rotate and recover.
Goal
It's working when the defense rotates correctly on every ball movement, no one standing still when the ball is skipped, everyone rotating and talking.
Helpful cues
- Rotate before the pass arrives, not after
- Call 'help' or 'I got ball' on every pass
- Be in a stance, flat feet mean flat defense
