How it works
Teach young wrestlers the basic penetration step with an emphasis on quick, explosive foot placement rather than power.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
The penetration step is the foundation of almost every takedown in wrestling, and learning it fast and correctly from a young age builds the right movement pattern. Focusing on speed over power at this age ensures the mechanics are clean before resistance is added. Early reps of explosive foot movement also develop the fast-twitch coordination that will enhance all future wrestling skills.
Wrestler starts in a balanced wrestling stance with feet shoulder-width apart.
On the coach's signal, wrestler drives their lead knee to the mat in a quick penetration step as fast as possible.
Immediately return to stance and reset before the next rep.
Complete 10 fast reps on the lead leg, then 10 reps on the opposite leg.
Goal
You've got it when your penetration step is explosive, low, fast, and the back knee nearly touches the mat.
Helpful cues
- Knee to the mat, don't drag your foot
- Explode like you're jumping, not walking
- Head up, eyes forward on every step
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Mark a spot on the mat with tape and have the wrestler step to the tape slowly, building the pattern before adding speed.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a short reaction component, wrestler must penetrate only when coach claps, building reactive speed. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
