How it works

Develop rapid level change ability by combining agility ladder footwork with wrestling stance transitions at high speed.

What you need

  • wrestling mat
  • agility ladder

Your focus

Level change is the first element of every effective shot, and wrestlers who can change levels quickly are far harder to defend. Combining ladder work with wrestling stance movement trains the specific footwork patterns used in takedown entries at training speed. The drill also develops the hip flexibility and ankle mobility needed for clean, low penetration steps.

1

Set up an agility ladder flat on the mat; wrestler starts in wrestling stance at one end.

2

Wrestler moves through the ladder using a lateral wrestling shuffle, maintaining low stance throughout.

3

At the end of the ladder, wrestler executes an explosive level change (drop level and drive forward) on the coach's signal.

4

Jog back to start and repeat 6-8 times, focusing on maintaining stance level throughout the ladder.

Goal

Success is completing the ladder pattern and firing into wrestling stance without slowing down between the two, speed carries through.

Helpful cues

  • Stay low through every ladder rung, no bobbing up
  • Change level with your hips, not just your knees
  • Explode out of the ladder, that's your shot

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Remove the ladder and perform stance shuffles across the mat, adding the level change at a marked spot.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a partner with a pad at the end of the ladder; wrestler must hit the pad with a level change and drive through it.
