How it works
Build proficiency in single-leg attacks through a drilling series covering the shot, the grip, and three different finishes.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
The single leg offers multiple finish options depending on how the opponent reacts, making it one of the most versatile attacks in wrestling. Drilling multiple finishes from the same initial attack position teaches wrestlers to read and react rather than forcing a single predetermined finish. Wrestlers with multiple single-leg finishes are nearly impossible to defend with one counter.
Attacker shoots a single leg, securing the opponent's near leg with both arms wrapped above the knee.
Drill Finish A: Run the pipe, lift and rotate the leg while driving forward to the mat.
Drill Finish B: Sweep the far ankle with your inside foot while driving the body across.
Drill Finish C: High crotch lift, readjust grip to inside thigh and lift the leg to force opponent down. Alternate finishes for 3 sets of 6 reps each.
Goal
Success is completing 3 different single-leg finishes cleanly, you have options, not just one way to finish.
Helpful cues
- Lock your grip tight before you commit to a finish
- Which finish you use depends on how their weight shifts, read it
- Keep your head up, diving your head in costs you the takedown
