How it works

Challenge team leaders to set the standard for effort and technique during the hardest conditioning round of practice.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

True leadership in wrestling is demonstrated on the mat, not in speeches; leaders who consistently outwork their teammates create a culture of effort that elevates everyone. Advanced wrestlers who accept this challenge develop accountability to something larger than their own performance. The hardest round, done with excellence, becomes a reference point the whole team remembers.

1

Coach announces the day's hardest round, typically a final live conditioning round or a max-effort drilling sprint.

2

Designated team leaders are called out by name and told the team is watching their effort and technique.

3

Leaders are matched with the toughest available partners and are expected to set the visible standard for effort.

4

After the round, coach specifically narrates what leadership behavior was observed, or calls out what was missing, in front of the team.

Helpful cues

  • When you want to stop, your teammates start watching, that's the moment that matters
  • Your attitude in the hardest round is your leadership speech
  • Excellence here gives everyone else permission to go hard

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach pairs leaders with partners of equal skill rather than tougher opponents to maintain success experiences.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Leaders must complete the hard round and then immediately lead a cool-down or technique correction session without rest.
