How it works
Develop the ability to stay composed and make controlled decisions during high-speed scramble situations.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
Scrambles are chaotic by nature and trigger fight-or-flight panic in many wrestlers. Staying composed in a scramble allows the athlete to recognize and capitalize on positional opportunities rather than simply surviving. Controlled scrambling separates good wrestlers from great ones at the high school level.
Both wrestlers start in a tie-up position and coach calls 'scramble', both attempt a takedown simultaneously.
Both wrestlers must stay engaged for a minimum of 10 seconds regardless of position.
Wrestlers are instructed to verbally identify the best next move mid-scramble ('hip', 'leg', 'back').
Coach stops the drill and both wrestlers explain what they felt and chose, debrief composure decisions.
Goal
You've got it when you make a clear decision during the scramble instead of just flailing, controlled, not panicked.
