How it works
Ignite competitive instinct in young wrestlers by making every drilling rep a mini-competition with a clear first-to-score goal.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
Young wrestlers often treat practice reps as cooperative exercises rather than competitive ones, which delays the development of their competitive instinct and urgency. Framing every rep as first-to-score introduces the competitive mindset in a low-stakes, age-appropriate context. Repeated exposure to small competitive moments builds the urgency and decisive action that define high compete level in matches.
Pair wrestlers of similar size on a mat.
From a starting position (both standing or referee's position), coach says 'go' and both wrestlers try to score first (takedown or escape).
First wrestler to score a point celebrates briefly, then both reset for the next rep.
Track informal wins over 10 reps; celebrate effort and improvement, not just wins.
Goal
You've got it when you attack first in every rep, the goal of scoring first makes every drilling rep feel like a competition.
Helpful cues
- First one to move is usually first one to score, go!
- Hesitation is your enemy, attack when you see the opening
- Celebrate your teammate's score too, compete level includes respect
