How it works
Develop team communication skills by rotating wrestlers through a corner coach role during live drilling rounds.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
Asking a wrestler to coach a peer forces them to observe technically, communicate clearly, and develop empathy for the challenge of articulating wrestling movements in real time. Team environments thrive when athletes can support each other between coach visits on the mat, and this drill builds exactly that capacity. The experience of being coached by a peer also improves receptivity to all coaching feedback.
Set up groups of three: two wrestlers in a live drilling round, one acting as corner coach.
The corner coach watches for one specific technical cue the head coach assigns them (e.g., 'watch for head position').
Between exchanges, the corner coach gives one verbal cue to the working wrestlers.
Rotate roles every 90 seconds so all three athletes experience each position.
Helpful cues
- Corner coach: one cue, one clear sentence, keep it simple
- Working wrestlers: hear your corner coach, they see what you can't
- Feedback is a gift, not a criticism
