How it works

Build the habit of listening to coaching instructions and immediately applying them on the mat.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Young wrestlers often hear a correction but take multiple rounds before attempting to apply it , this drill creates immediate accountability for applying what was just taught. Early development of the instruction-to-application habit makes every future coaching interaction more effective. Children who learn to translate verbal instruction into physical action quickly develop technical skills at a faster rate.

1

Coach demonstrates a simple stance or movement correction and explains it in one clear sentence.

2

Wrestlers immediately practice the corrected movement for 30 seconds while the coach watches.

3

Coach provides positive reinforcement to wrestlers who applied the correction and gently redirects those who didn't.

4

Repeat with a new technical point; cycle through 4-5 corrections per practice segment.

Helpful cues

  • When coach talks, eyes and ears forward, hands at your sides
  • Try the correction right away, even if it feels different
  • Asking a question is smart; not trying is not coachable
