How it works

Train wrestlers to immediately re-attack after a failed shot attempt is sprawled on, maintaining offensive chain wrestling.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

A sprawled shot is one of the most common situations where wrestlers stop competing and stand up to reset, handing the opponent a psychological advantage. Drilling the re-attack from a sprawled-on position teaches wrestlers that a failed first shot is the setup for a second attack, not a reason to disengage. This changes the athlete's mental model from 'shot failed, reset' to 'shot led to next opportunity.'

1

Wrestler shoots a single-leg; partner sprawls and drives their hips down to stop the shot.

2

Shooting wrestler does not retreat but instead looks immediately for a re-attack: switch to a double leg, ankle pick, or back door single.

3

Chain the re-attack smoothly off the sprawl reaction rather than waiting for a reset.

4

Complete 4-minute rounds where the objective is to always have a next move after a failed shot.

Goal

Success is re-attacking immediately after the sprawl, you're back on the offensive before your partner feels like they've stopped you.

Helpful cues

  • Your shot being stopped is the start of chain wrestling, not the end
  • Feel what their sprawl gives you, usually a leg or an inside position
  • Attack while they think they've won, they're thinking about defense

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Partner half-sprawls, leaving obvious openings to make the re-attack easier to find.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Partner fully sprawls and drives to the mat, requiring the shooter to create an opening with movement.
