How it works
Train the drop step, the first movement in reading a hit, through solo repetition to all four defensive zones.
What you need
- cones
Your focus
The drop step is the first movement a defender makes after reading a hitter's arm swing. Solo reps train the foot to move before the brain fully registers the call , the same way it must react during a live point.
Place 4 cones in the corners of a 6x6-yard box (upper-left, upper-right, lower-left, lower-right).
Start at center in defensive ready stance.
Self-call a corner, verbally or mentally. Take a drop step (pivot the foot closest to that corner) and sprint to the cone.
Touch the cone, return to center, reset ready stance.
Call a new corner immediately. Complete 5 sets of 8 calls, mixing all four corners randomly.
Goal
You've got it when your drop step fires automatically on the call, no hesitation, no extra shuffle steps before committing.
Helpful cues
- Drop step first, don't crossover or hop to start
- Pivot off the foot closest to your target corner
- Stay low through the entire movement, don't stand up to sprint
- Return to center under control, not just fast
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Use only 2 cones (left and right) and go slowly. Focus on the drop step foot pivot, not the sprint.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Use a metronome or random audio cue and assign each beat to a corner. React to the sound without self-calling.No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
