How it works
Train hitters to read setter hand position and ball trajectory to enter readiness for the correct hitting approach before the set is released.

Your focus
Late hitters miss sets not because they are slow but because they start their approach too late. Reading the setter's hands and ball angle during the set , not after it is released , gives hitters an extra half-second of preparation time. This drill shifts hitters from reactive to anticipatory readiness.
Setter stands at Zone 3; two hitters stand in their approach zones (outside and right side).
Setter catches a tossed pass and holds for 2 seconds while hitters must verbally call 'outside' or 'right side' based on the setter's hand and body angle before the set is released.
Setter releases the set; hitter who called correctly attacks while the other resets.
Progress to normal tempo where the call must happen simultaneously with the set release, not after.
Goal
Success is starting your approach footwork before the setter releases the ball, your read of the set got you moving early.
Helpful cues
- Read the setter's hands, not where the ball is going
- Your approach starts when the setter catches, not when they set
- Two eyes on the setter until you read the set direction
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Setter exaggerates body angle toward the target (obvious lean) to make the read easier.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Setter uses a quick set and a shoot set in the same sequence; hitter must read the speed and angle change simultaneously. No account needed
