How it works

Establish the habit of returning to full defensive ready stance after every contact before the next ball is served.

Your focus

Players who remain upright or relax after a play are never ready for the next ball. The window between contacts is where readiness is either maintained or lost. Building a post-contact reset habit ensures every player is physically and mentally prepared for the next play, not the last one.

1

Run a 3-on-3 scrimmage; after every contact (including errors), coach blows a whistle and all players must immediately drop to their defensive ready stance.

2

Coach will not toss the next ball until all 6 players are in correct ready position.

3

Designate a 'readiness monitor' who calls out any player not in position before the next ball is served.

4

After 15 minutes, remove the whistle cue and challenge players to self-reset between every play on their own.

Goal

It's clicking when you're back in ready position before the next ball is served, automatic reset, every single time.

Helpful cues

  • The play is over, reset your body NOW
  • You can't defend what you're not ready for
  • Between every play, chin up, knees bent, hands live

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use only serving drills (no rally) so players only need to reset between one contact at a time.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Introduce a 3-second reset window, if any player is not in stance within 3 seconds of the whistle, the team loses a point.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
