How it works
Train players to use multiple pre-contact anticipation cues (setter, hitter shoulder, ball trajectory) to achieve maximum defensive readiness before every attack.

Your focus
Elite defenders have already moved before the ball is struck because they have read the sequence of setter hands, hitter approach, and shoulder angle. Layering these cues into a live scrimmage forces players to integrate all three simultaneously. This is the highest level of readiness , not reaction speed, but anticipation accuracy.
Run a full 6-on-6 scrimmage. Pause after every offensive play and ask the defensive libero or back row: 'What did you see before the ball was hit?'
Coach assigns three cues to track simultaneously each rally: setter hand angle, hitter arm swing speed, and whether the hitter was inside or outside the ball.
After 5 rallies, each defender must verbally confirm before the next serve what their cue was and where they positioned based on it.
Evaluate readiness quality by how many digs are made from a stopped position versus an off-balance reaction, track for 3 weeks.
Goal
It's real when you're in the right position before 3 consecutive attacks, reading multiple cues, not reacting to one.
Helpful cues
- Three cues, in order: setter, hitter, ball
- Your feet should be still when the ball is struck, if you're moving, you're late
- Anticipation is preparation, react early, not fast
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Isolate one cue per practice session (setter only, then hitter only) before combining all three.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a deceptive setter who looks one direction and sets another, forcing defenders to prioritize hitter cues over setter cues.No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
