How it works
Teach players to neutralize negative self-talk after errors by using a physical 'reset' ritual and positive replacement statement.

Your focus
Negative self-talk after errors compounds mistakes and erodes confidence across a match. A structured physical and verbal reset interrupts the negative spiral before it escalates. Practicing this habit in training builds the muscle memory to use it automatically in competition.
Place an empty jar on the boundary labeled 'Error Jar.'
Run a standard scrimmage; whenever a player says something negative about themselves after a mistake ('I'm so bad,' 'I always miss that'), they walk to the jar and drop an imaginary coin in, symbolically 'paying' for the negative thought.
They must then say their replacement phrase out loud ('I'll get the next one') before returning to the space.
Debrief at the end of practice: how did the ritual change their reaction? Did fewer negative thoughts appear over time?
Helpful cues
- Notice the thought, then swap it
- The jar is not punishment, it is practice for your brain
- Positive self-talk is a skill, just like serving
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Coach models the error jar ritual first, including 'making a mistake' deliberately to normalize it.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Extend to include negative body language (shoulder slump, eye roll) triggering the reset, not just words. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
