Your focus
Elite athletes face stacked adversity , a bad call, a key injury, a noisy crowd, and a scoring deficit simultaneously. Training the mindset to segment problems and stay process-focused under compound pressure is what separates tournament competitors from practice performers. This drill removes all comfort zones deliberately.
Run a 6-on-6 scrimmage to 25. Introduce three adversity conditions at once: one team plays down 5 points from the start, plays with only 5 players, and must rotate one extra position clockwise.
The disadvantaged team must set a team intention word before the first serve ('adapt,' 'compete,' 'together').
Coach tracks and records how many times the team returns to their intention word after a lost point versus spiraling negatively.
Rotate which team receives adversity; debrief on how intention words changed behavior.
Helpful cues
- You cannot control the adversity, only your response
- One play, one point, one breath at a time
- The team that adapts fastest always wins
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Apply only one adversity condition (score deficit only) before adding others in subsequent weeks.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a referee making two deliberate bad calls the team must accept without protest and play through. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
