How it works

Develop player-led timeout leadership by having captains diagnose a team problem and communicate an adjustment.

Your focus

Game-time leadership includes the ability to analyze what is going wrong and communicate a fix calmly under pressure. Practicing timeout leadership trains both tactical thinking and interpersonal communication skills. Players who can lead in adversity become irreplaceable assets to any team.

1

Run a 5-on-5 scrimmage to 10 points. Coach deliberately stays on the boundary and does not call timeouts.

2

When a team falls 3 or more points behind, the designated captain must call timeout and lead a 30-second team huddle.

3

Captain must identify one specific problem (e.g., 'we're passing too high,' 'we're not communicating') and one adjustment.

4

Team plays out after the timeout; debrief on whether the adjustment was clear and actually implemented.

Helpful cues

  • Be specific, 'play better' is not an adjustment
  • Keep your voice calm and your body language confident
  • Ask your teammates if they have anything to add, leaders listen too
