Your focus
How a team responds to mistakes determines culture and momentum. Young leaders need a rehearsed, authentic response to errors that resets the team quickly. Practicing positive recovery language in low-stakes drills builds the habit before it is needed in games.
Run a standard 3-contact passing drill (pass-set-hit) across the net in groups of 3.
Whenever a ball hits the floor, the designated leader (rotates each round) must immediately say a reset phrase ('Next ball,' 'We got this,' 'Shake it off') before the next ball is served.
The team echoes the phrase back to reinforce collective ownership.
After 10 minutes, debrief: ask players how the phrase changed how they felt before the next contact.
Helpful cues
- Say it fast, before the negativity sets in
- Mean it, flat voice doesn't help the team
- You set the tone; what you do after an error is what your team remembers
