Train players to maintain peak effort output and technical execution through extreme physical and mental fatigue.

- multiple balls
- 20 balls minimum
Your focus
Championship moments demand maximum effort when the body is most tired. The Toughness Gauntlet intentionally creates an extreme effort demand , far exceeding game conditions , so that game-level demand feels manageable by comparison. Players who have survived training harder than the game find competitive situations easier to sustain effort through, particularly in extended five-set matches.
A player stands in the middle of the space; two coaches feed alternating balls from each the boundary continuously for 3 minutes, the player must play every ball.
The player earns an 'Effort Score' for each ball: 2 points for full pursuit + quality contact, 1 point for full pursuit only, 0 points for half-hearted effort regardless of contact quality.
At 3 minutes, the player has a 1-minute active recovery (light shuffle, deep breathing); then immediately repeats for a second 3-minute gauntlet.
Second gauntlet: coach announces the player's Round 1 Effort Score, the player must match or exceed it in Round 2 while physically fatigued.
Helpful cues
- Round 2 when you're tired is where champions are made
- Your body will lie to you, your effort score won't
- One more step, one more play, one more point
