Your focus
Effort is a trainable habit, not a personality trait. Players who learn that their coachable effort is valued and tracked develop a consistent work ethic that accelerates skill acquisition and sets a positive team culture. Effort-focused training at the 10-13 age level establishes the competitive standards players carry into high school and beyond.
Coach feeds 20 serve-receive balls per player, 10 are comfortable (in their target area), 10 are challenging (wide, short, deep).
Players earn 1 point for every quality pass regardless of difficulty; they earn a bonus point for any challenging ball where they move all-out to make the play.
Coach tracks effort indicators (first step speed, full extension, verbal call) separately from passing accuracy ratings.
At the end, coach highlights three specific effort moments with name and description, players who are highlighted share what they were thinking in that moment.
Goal
It's clicking when your effort on rep 20 looks the same as rep 1, maximum effort is a standard, not a feeling.
Helpful cues
- Your first step tells your team everything about your effort
- Comfortable passes are the warm-up; hard passes are the work
- Effort is always in your control, skill is not, start with effort
