How it works

Develop competitive drive and effort culture by tying point scoring to team energy and encouragement.

What you need

  • volleyball (soft)
  • net
  • open court

Your focus

Competitive drive in young players is cultivated through positive team energy, not pressure. When players learn that their encouragement directly contributes to team success, they develop both a competitive mindset and the prosocial habit of supporting teammates. This dual development is foundational to positive youth sports culture.

1

Teams of 3-4 play a simplified rally game to 5 points; after every point won, the scoring team must high-five every player before the next serve.

2

Introduce the Cheer Rule: a team earns a bonus point if ALL players on their side cheer loudly after a teammate's good play (defined as any successful contact).

3

Coach models what 'loud' and 'genuine' cheering looks and sounds like; players vote at the end whether cheering helped the team feel better.

4

Switch teams every game; discuss what it felt like to play on an encouraging team vs. a quiet team.

Helpful cues

  • Your cheer is worth a point, use it
  • Loud teams score more because they believe more
  • The best thing you can do after a teammate's miss is make them feel ready to go again

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Bonus points only require any one player to cheer, not all players, reducing the group coordination demand.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Require specific, skills-based encouragement ('Great platform!') rather than general cheering to build technical vocabulary alongside competitive drive.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
