Color Call Pass
Decision Making

How it works
Introduce fast read-and-react decision making by having players respond to a color cue before contacting the ball.
What you need
- volleyball (or foam ball)
- colored pinnies or cones in two colors
Your focus
Rapid decision making begins with training athletes to process a visual stimulus and produce a physical response under time pressure. Color-coded cues are simple enough for young players to process quickly, establishing the stimulus-response neural pathway that underpins all in-game decisions. Early success with simple cues builds the cognitive speed needed for complex split-second choices later.
Lay two colored cones (red and blue) on each side of the court 6 feet from the net; assign passing target positions to each color.
Coach holds up a colored card while tossing the ball to a player; the player must pass to the target matching the coach's card color.
Players rotate through in groups of three; run 10 reps per player, varying colors randomly.
Add a mild time rule: if the player looks at the color card AFTER the ball is tossed (too late), coach calls 'Late!', players earn a star for pre-toss reads.
Goal
You've got it when you call the color and move to the right zone at the same time, no hesitation between seeing and moving.
Helpful cues
- See the color, see the ball
- Decide before you swing
- Quick eyes make quick hands
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Coach shows the color card 3 seconds before tossing; gradually reduce lead time over weeks.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a third color with a different target, three options increase the processing demand. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
