How it works

Develop multi-directional coordination and body control through a structured footwork circuit linked to volleyball-specific movements.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • agility ladder
  • cones
  • net

Your focus

Elite volleyball players make 8-12 explosive directional changes per rally. An agility ladder circuit that terminates in a volleyball-specific action (pass, set, contact) trains the brain to link athletic footwork with skilled movements, improving fluency and efficiency. Players who train footwork in isolation rarely transfer it to game situations , this drill bridges that gap.

1

Set up: agility ladder on one side (5 rungs), three cones in a triangle 8 feet beyond the ladder, a tosser at the net.

2

Player runs a designated ladder pattern (two-in, lateral shuffle, or Icky shuffle), sprints around the cone triangle, and arrives at a passing target where the tosser delivers a ball.

3

Player passes to a target setter and immediately returns to start position for the next rep; 8 reps per player.

4

Rotate ladder pattern each set of 8 reps so all three footwork patterns are covered; coach evaluates landing balance before the pass.

Goal

Success is moving through all the circuit stations without losing your volleyball posture, bent knees, ready arms, through every transition.

Helpful cues

  • Quick feet in the ladder, quiet feet at the ball
  • Controlled arrival beats rushed arrival every time
  • Hips low when you hit the ball zone

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Remove the ladder and use three cones only; player runs the cone pattern and then passes.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a second ball fed immediately after the first pass so the player must redirect and play two consecutive contacts.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
