How it works

Develop precise hand-to-foot coordination in setters by combining directional footwork with consistent hand positioning on varied ball locations.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • net

Your focus

Setting excellence depends on the setter's ability to arrive at the ball with feet squared and hands in a consistent pre-contact window regardless of the pass quality. Poor coordination between footwork and hand preparation leads to late or off-center sets under pressure. This drill isolates the timing relationship between foot arrival and hand shape formation.

1

Coach stands 15 feet from setter position and tosses balls to four zones (left, right, short, deep); setter must call the zone as soon as they read the toss.

2

Setter runs to the zone, squares feet to target, and forms hand shape BEFORE the ball arrives, coach checks hand shape on arrival, not at contact.

3

Contact and set to a designated target (pin, middle, opposite); repeat 20 reps across all four zones randomly.

4

Final 10 reps: coach introduces a dummy blocker behind the net; setter must also read block position and adjust set height accordingly.

Goal

You're there when your feet arrive at the ball and your hands are already shaped, footwork and hand position happen at the same time.

Helpful cues

  • Hands up before the ball arrives
  • Square your feet to where you're setting
  • Read the toss early, your feet follow your eyes

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Limit to two zones (left and right) so the footwork pattern is predictable and hand shape can be the sole focus.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Introduce back-set options, setter must decide front or back set based on a coach hand signal given at the moment of contact.
