How it works
Build young players' confidence by letting them repeatedly practice and show off their favorite ball-contact skill.
What you need
- volleyball (soft/foam)
- open wall space
Your focus
Confidence in young athletes is rooted in self-efficacy , the belief that effort leads to success. Choosing their own 'best move' gives players ownership and autonomy, which amplifies intrinsic motivation. Repeated successful contacts at a self-selected challenge level reinforces a 'I can do this' mindset before introducing external pressure.
Each player stands 3 feet from a wall with a soft volleyball and chooses one skill: toss-and-catch, self-bump, or self-set.
Players practice their chosen skill for 2 minutes, counting consecutive successful contacts.
Each player announces their personal best to the group; everyone celebrates with applause.
Players attempt to beat their own personal best in a second 2-minute round, coach emphasizes competing against yourself, not others.
Helpful cues
- You chose it, you own it
- Count your wins, not your misses
