How it works
Build pre-serve confidence through a consistent pre-performance routine that reduces anxiety and increases execution reliability.

- net
- cones for target zones
Your focus
High-pressure serving failures are rarely physical , they are mental. A consistent pre-serve routine activates focus, controls breathing, and triggers a learned performance state. USA Volleyball research shows that athletes with pre-performance routines perform more consistently under pressure because the routine bypasses the overthinking loop that leads to service errors.
Coach introduces a 4-step serve ritual: (a) bounce the ball three times, (b) visualize the delivery landing in the target, (c) take one deep breath, (d) serve with full commitment.
Players practice the ritual during 20 individual serve reps from the back line, focusing on routine consistency rather than outcome.
Run a competitive serving game (small-sided activity teams earn points for serves in designated target zones) requiring all players to perform the full ritual before each delivery, no rushing allowed.
Debrief: which part of the ritual felt most helpful? Players customize their own 4-step version with coach approval.
Helpful cues
- Routine first, then the ball
- Visualization is a rep, treat it like one
- Commit when the ball leaves your hand
