How it works
Build attacking confidence by training hitters to commit fully to a chosen shot against defensive pressure.
What you need
- volleyball
- net
- blocking pads or single blocker
Your focus
Uncommitted attacks , the result of second-guessing at the apex , are the most common source of hitting errors in competitive volleyball. True attacking confidence means locking into a shot selection early and executing with full body commitment regardless of the block. This drill trains that commitment loop in a high-repetition environment with immediate feedback.
Setter feeds from position 2 or 3; hitter approaches and calls their shot ('line' or 'angle') before leaving the ground, no changing after takeoff.
A single blocker positions based on the called shot; hitter must still execute the committed shot with full swing, no tips or roll shots allowed.
Coach tracks committed swings vs. flinched shots; only full-commitment swings count toward the hitter's score regardless of whether they land in bounds.
After 15 swings, review film or coach feedback, identify one technical element to sharpen for the next block of reps.
Goal
You've got it when you commit to your shot selection before you leave the ground, no second-guessing mid-air, just full follow-through on your decision.
Helpful cues
- Call it, own it, swing it
- A full swing in the net beats a tip out of fear
- Blockers respect committed hitters, be one
