How it works

Teach young players a simple physical reset routine to regain composure after a mistake.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • open floor space

Your focus

Young athletes often carry frustration from errors into the next play, compounding mistakes. A brief physical ritual , shaking out the hands, taking a breath, saying a reset word , breaks the emotional loop and refocuses attention. Practicing the routine in low-stakes drills builds the habit so it transfers automatically during games.

1

Coach explains the three-step reset: shake both hands out, take one big breath, say 'Next play!' aloud.

2

Players practice the reset routine together as a group three times before the drill starts.

3

Players form a circle and toss the ball to each other; whenever a player drops or mishits, they immediately perform the reset routine before re-entering.

4

Coach reinforces correct execution of the reset with positive feedback and models calm body language throughout.

Helpful cues

  • Shake the miss out of your hands
  • Big breath in, reset out
  • Say 'Next play' and mean it

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach calls 'Reset!' as a group after every single error so no player is singled out.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a second toss immediately after the reset so players must refocus and perform under quick re-engagement pressure.
