How it works

Practice verbal communication during the transition from defense to offense within a live rally.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • net
  • full court

Your focus

Transition , moving from defense to offense after a dig , is one of the most chaotic moments in volleyball and the most communication-dependent. Players must call who's setting when the setter is out of position, where the hitters are, and who has the free ball. Teams that communicate through transition win more rallies than those who try to figure it out silently.

1

Coach initiates each rally with a free ball over the net to a 6-person team.

2

The team must verbally complete: (a) passer calls 'mine,' (b) setter calls 'I've got it' or 'release,' (c) hitters call their approach side before approaching.

3

After three contacts, the ball must cross the net. Coach evaluates how many of the three communication steps were completed.

4

Run 20 rallies. Score: 1 point for a successful transition, +1 bonus for completing all three communication steps.

5

Target: 80% of rallies with all three communication steps completed.

Goal

Success is a verbal call that happens before the transition, not after, 'mine,' 'help,' 'setter up', called early enough to actually help.

Helpful cues

  • Communication starts when the ball is dug, not when it's set
  • Setter, talk to your hitters before you set
  • Free ball is an opportunity, communicate and finish cleanly

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Start with free balls only; introduce digs later once communication is consistent.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Run a full 6v6 scrimmage and count communication steps in live rallies.
