How it works

Develop synchronized back-row defensive communication so all three defenders are calling the block and adjusting positions before contact.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • net
  • full court

Your focus

Defensive systems function only when the back row is communicating with the block in real time. The libero or defensive specialist must call the block type, adjust coverage assignments, and communicate ball trajectory during transition , all in under two seconds. Systematic repetition of this sequence makes it second nature under pressure.

1

Set up a full defensive system: two blockers at the net, three defenders in the back row.

2

Coach sets to a hitter. Before the attack: (a) blockers call 'Line' or 'Angle,' (b) libero confirms 'I've got cross' or 'I've got line,' (c) other defenders call their zones.

3

Hitter attacks; defense executes based on the calls.

4

After each play, players rate communication: 'Complete' (all calls made before contact) or 'Incomplete' (any call was missing or late).

5

Run until the team achieves 10 consecutive 'Complete' sequences.

Helpful cues

  • Libero, you're the quarterback of the defense
  • Calls must happen before the hitter contacts the ball
  • Wrong call together is better than right call alone

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Walk through the call sequence without a live ball three times before adding a hitter.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Hitters mix tips and hard attacks; defensive calls must account for both possibilities.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
