How it works

Build team serve receive organization through pre-serve communication and defined coverage zones.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • net
  • court

Your focus

Serve receive is a team skill, not an individual one , the whole back row must communicate and trust each other's zones. A team that has practiced organizing itself before every serve will handle tough serves with confidence rather than confusion. This drill establishes the communication habits that make organized serve receive automatic.

1

Set up a 3-person serve receive (three passers across the back row).

2

Before each serve, players call out their zones: 'Left side mine!' / 'Middle mine!' / 'Right side mine!'

3

Coach serves 10 balls to various zones. Each passer is responsible only for their called zone.

4

If a ball lands in a seam, the player who called it closest takes the ball.

5

After each failed pass, team re-organizes and adjusts zone sizes before next serve.

Goal

It's clicking when every player is in the right spot before the serve arrives, the communication before the serve sets everyone up to succeed.

Helpful cues

  • Call your zone before the server tosses
  • Seam balls go to whoever is closest, call it early
  • After a miss, communicate, don't just reset silently
