Your focus
Matches often hinge on halftime or timeout adjustments. A team full of coachable players implements changes quickly, giving the coach a real competitive weapon. This drill creates the habit of listening during timeouts and executing immediately after , a habit that must be trained, not assumed.
Run a scrimmage to 10 points.
Call a mid-game timeout. Introduce ONE specific tactical change (e.g., 'All serves go crosscourt' or 'Setter, run a quick set every time the pass is perfect').
Resume play. After the next 5 points, evaluate how consistently the adjustment was executed.
Score 'coachability points': 1 point per player per correct execution of the adjustment.
Debrief: what made it easy or hard to implement the change mid-game?
Helpful cues
- Timeouts are information transfers, silence and listen
- Implementing a change in the next point is the most coachable thing you can do
- Don't revert to old habits just because it's comfortable
