How it works

Set one specific, actionable intention before every rep, then measure whether execution matched.

Your focus

Unfocused repetitions build habits , but not necessarily good ones. Deliberate intention before each rep forces the athlete to be specific about what they're trying to do, which directs attention to the right thing during execution. The matching exercise builds self-awareness, which is the foundation of self-coaching ability.

1

Before every single rep, state one specific intention out loud.

2

The intention must be actionable: 'I will keep my weight forward on my first step', not 'I will do well.'

3

Execute with that intention as the only focus.

4

After the rep, rate 1–5 how well execution matched intention.

5

Coach rates the same independently, compare and discuss the gap every five reps.

Goal

Player's self-rating matches coach's rating within one point on four of five reps.

Helpful cues

  • Specific intentions create specific feedback
  • Vague intent produces vague execution
  • If you can't state the intention, you're not ready to rep it

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Allow player to choose their own intention rating system to reduce cognitive load.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Set the intention silently, coach must guess it from the execution quality.
