How it works
Develop first-step quickness and directional change speed in a fun, game-like movement drill.
What you need
- 5 foam balls or cones
- mini court or service box area
- timer
Your focus
Young children develop movement patterns most effectively through game-like activities with simple objectives. The spider run trains explosive starts, stopping, and changes of direction , all foundational on-court movement skills. Using a scaled court keeps distances appropriate for young children's stride length and acceleration capabilities.
Place 5 foam balls or cones at the four corners and center of a service box.
Player starts at the center; on 'go,' sprints to one corner, picks up the ball, returns it to center, then sprints to the next corner.
Player collects all 5 balls back to the center as fast as possible; coach times each attempt.
Run 3 attempts with full recovery between each; celebrate improvement in time across attempts.
Goal
You've got it when you're always the first one to touch the cone, you're not jogging to the spots, you're attacking them.
Helpful cues
- Explode off your first step!
- Low and quick on the turns.
- Drive your arms, fast arms make fast feet.
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Reduce to 3 balls/cones (center, left, right) to shorten the distance and simplify the pattern.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Player must tap each cone without picking it up, increasing the number of sprints in the same drill space. No account needed
