How it works

Improve first-step quickness and reaction time by responding to visual cues from the coach.

What you need

  • tennis court
  • tennis balls (optional)

Your focus

In match play, the first step to the ball is often the most critical factor in reaching it in time; a slow first step makes every subsequent shot harder. Reaction-based drills train the nervous system to move explosively before the conscious mind processes the full movement, which is how elite movers operate. Visual cue training also mirrors the real match experience of reading opponent body language before the ball is struck.

1

Player stands at the center service line in ready position (split step stance).

2

Coach stands at the net and points either left or right without warning; player takes 3 explosive steps in that direction as fast as possible.

3

Coach immediately points in the next direction; player plants and explodes back.

4

Complete 10 direction changes per set; run 3 sets with 45 seconds rest between sets.

Goal

It's clicking when your first step fires before you've fully decided, your body is reacting to the signal, not waiting for your brain to catch up.

Helpful cues

  • Split step first, then explode.
  • Your first step sets up everything.
  • Low stance equals fast start.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach gives a verbal cue ('left' or 'right') in addition to the visual point to allow a split-second more reaction time.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Coach feeds a ball to the pointed side immediately after the signal, requiring the player to transition from footwork drill to an actual groundstroke.
