How it works

Develop explosive acceleration to extremely wide balls combined with controlled shot-making and rapid recovery.

What you need

  • tennis balls
  • tennis racket
  • full court
  • ball machine or coach feeder

Your focus

At the intermediate-advanced level, players are routinely forced wide and must both reach the ball and recover quickly while making a quality defensive shot. Training this scenario specifically prevents the common habit of stopping to watch the shot after a wide ball instead of immediately beginning recovery. Combining explosive movement with technical shot-making under speed stress directly transfers to match performance.

1

Player stands at center baseline in ready position; parent, coach, or ball machine feeds an aggressive wide ball to the forehand or backhand corner.

2

Player performs a split step on the feeder's toss/release action, then explosively sprints to the wide ball.

3

Player makes contact and immediately sprints back to the center of the baseline without watching the ball land.

4

The feeder sends the next wide ball (opposite side) within 2 seconds of the player reaching center; complete 6 consecutive wide balls per set.

Goal

You're there when you reach the extreme wide ball and make a controlled shot, not just touching it, but producing something your opponent has to deal with.

Helpful cues

  • Split step triggers your sprint.
  • Hit and run, don't admire the shot.
  • Get back to center before the ball bounces on the other side.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Feed balls at moderate pace and only to one side for a full set before alternating to the opposite side.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Player must win the point (not just make the defensive shot) by either passing the coach or outlasting a live rally after the wide ball.
