How it works
Integrate explosive acceleration, multi-directional change of direction, and racket-in-hand movement to simulate real match-speed movement demands.
What you need
- tennis court
- cones
- agility ladder
- tennis balls
- tennis racket
- timer
Your focus
Advanced match play requires players to combine pure speed with coordinated racket preparation; training them separately creates a performance gap. Circuit-based on-court speed training builds the metabolic conditioning needed to sustain explosive movement late in a three-set match. Integrating footwork patterns with live ball scenarios bridges the gap between athletic training and tennis skill.
Set up three stations in sequence: (a) 6-rung agility ladder at baseline, 2 ladder patterns; (b) sprint to wide cone and back; (c) coach feeds a groundstroke to be played at full speed.
Player completes all three stations as one circuit without stopping; time each full circuit.
Rest exactly 45 seconds between circuits.
Complete 6 circuits; track circuit times and compare first vs. last three to evaluate speed maintenance under fatigue.
Goal
It's real when the full circuit feels like a match, you're covering ground and hitting shots, and the speed of both feels natural together.
Helpful cues
- Top speed at station 3, that's when it matters in a match.
- Racket back during the sprint, not after.
- Speed drops when focus drops, compete every rep.
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Remove the agility ladder and replace with a simple cone weave to reduce coordination demand.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
After the groundstroke at station 3, coach feeds a volley to the net forcing the player to transition immediately from a sprint to a net approach. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
