How it works

Practice serving then immediately moving to attack the return, building point construction habit.

What you need

  • tennis balls
  • cones

Your focus

The "serve plus one" pattern is the most important point construction concept in tennis. Following the serve with an immediate aggressive ball sets the tone of the point from shot one.

1

Serve to the deuce court. Immediately after contact, split-step.

2

Parent feeds a return to the open court. Player moves to it and hits an approach shot.

3

10 reps to deuce; 10 reps to ad court.

4

Track approach shots that land deep in the service box.

5

Progress: follow the approach to the net.

Goal

You've got it when your approach shot after the serve lands deep in the service box on 15 of 20 reps.

Helpful cues

  • Split step immediately after you hit the serve, don't watch it
  • Move to the ball, don't wait for it to come to you
  • Approach shot: deep, not flashy, set up the easy volley

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Rally only, remove the serve and just practice the approach shot off a fed ball.
